I am beginning this month’s newsletter with what has become a rather nasty fact of life:  inflation.

We hear many arguments about what is causing the rampant inflation which we are experiencing in the United States.  Related to gasoline prices, we are told that the blame belongs to the big oil companies which are making too much money and they should cut their prices.  Yet, those same oil companies were here when the price of gasoline was as low as $1.87/gallon in some areas.  More recently, we are told that we consumers are spending too much money and, therefore, we are to blame for this situation.

If we take time to drown out the noise including the politics surrounding it and just go to the truth, we can find the real answer.  It is contained in the Word of God where all answers to all human difficulties are located.

The Bible provides a lot of truth about finances…..both personal and governmental.  How about the borrower becomes a slave to the lender because Biblical truth has been ignored.

“For which one of you,

when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate

the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?”

(Luke 14:28)

Beyond an individual's financial decisions, this should remind us that America is swimming in debt because the cost has not been counted first.  Adding to that debt is an excessive amount of money which has been dumped into the economy resulting in rampant inflation.

But, inflation is just one example of the consequences when financial resources are not managed in a Godly manner.

There is also something hidden about inflation and, therefore, is seldom discussed.  It is when a business owner will intentionally use it as a convenient excuse to gouge customers.  Yes, it is true the cost of doing business can increase and it may be necessary to increase prices.  But, by how much?

I share with you two cases that illustrate how two business owners in my area are dealing with inflation.

Last summer, while watering my lawn, I discovered there was a leak at one of my outside spigots causing water to escape from where my hose was attached.  I called the plumber thinking it would be necessary to replace it.  After arriving, the service representative immediately discovered the problem was some kind of a loose set screw.  He returned to his truck to obtain a tool and then returned to to correct the situation.  Problem solved in about ten seconds

Being judgment day honest, I will tell you that from the time he arrived at my home until he left was less than five minutes.  No part had to be used…just tighten the screw.

Total cost of the service:  $120.

How would you like to have a job in which you can earn $24 per minute?

Thank the good Lord I had the money to pay the bill.  But, consider this: How about the widow whose monthly income is only $1400 (social security) and she can hardly pay for food and medicine much less pay to have this plumber repair a toilet or other such home equipment.

Because of the rampant inflation, a local restaurant owner’s bank has greatly increased his cost each time he accepts a credit card for payment of a meal.  It is easy for him to conveniently pass the cost along to his customers by raising the prices he charges for meals. It would also be convenient for him to pad that amount with an additional charge and just blame it on inflation.

But, no…..because of his appreciation for those who enable him to stay in business, he has discovered a better plan which benefits him and his customers.  He recently posted a notice at the front of his restaurant which reads…..If you pay using a credit card, we must add an additional 4 percent to your bill but not if you pay with cash.

“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit,

but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

Each of you look not only to his own interests,

but also to the interests of others."

(Philippians 2:3-4)

Looking through the eyes of Jesus and examining both cases, what would our Lord say?  I leave the question with you to answer.
