THE CHRISTIAN WORK ETHIC NEWSLETTER

I came very close to entitling this month’s newsletter…

I’M SO TIRED!..........

so tired of hearing about the “R” word.  The word is so revolting, I’m almost embarrassed to spell it.......

R-E-T-I-R-E-M-E-N-T.

Oh, but so many have been infected by the R-BUG.  Make all of the money you can make, invest it wisely……and you can be a millionaire before age 50.  The message sounds so good to so many including many young people.

May I be very careful not to say the “R Word” to Carol Miller.  This precious 99-year old lady is employed by Chic-Fil-A in Cincinnati, Ohio.  She works six days a week and shows no signs of slowing down.  She actually walks to work picking up trash on the way.  In fact, before she was ever hired, she could be seen picking up trash on the Chic-Fil-A property.   She will quickly let you know that her job is the best part of her day.  That truth is amplified through the way she cares for her customers.

Those who have come close to knowing her call her “Miss Carol”.  She started working there five years ago. Her boss says she is always reporting to work on time and never misses a day from work..

The name of her employer should be no surprise because one of the trademarks of Chic-Fil-A is they do not discriminate against the elderly when they are hiring workers.  And, the major reason is they are a well known Christian business.

In addition, the management of such organizations has learned a valuable lesson.  When you do not discriminate, you win and the employee wins.

How about this 99-year old who is working with young workers.  Because of her hard work ranging from her work pace to the manner in which she greets and serves customers, she is setting the example.  And, only the Lord knows, how so many young people need to see what is meant by a work ethic on display by a model employee.

So that I, myself, do not engage in discrimination in this message, I am reminded that lack of a work ethic does not just apply to some young people. I well recall an employee who exhibited outstanding performance throughout his career.....until...reaching age 63 and then something happened.  Although he still possessed excellent health, he actually retired on the job meaning that he intentionally marked time with a minimum of effort until leaving the company at age 65.

Think about it.  Although one can function with a superb work ethic for many years, when it comes to a reputation, most co-workers do not remember all such years.  But, they surely remember the last few years of one who totally changed for the worse especially if they had to take up the slack so his work could be finished.  This becomes an ethical issue because he was being paid for only doing the bare minimum.

This is the last thing that needs to take place in the life of a Christian. It's all about working as unto the Lord with perseverance because our Lord is the one to whom we ultimately report and to whom we are accountable for using the talents and abilities He has gifted to us and to the fullest extent possible.

Let me be clear so there is no confusion.  God has no problem with one who retires from an organization in which he or she has earned that benefit.  As an example, I served as a Corporate Training Director for one company for thirty two years but when I left, I did not retire on God.

I am still working and am enjoying every minute serving as President of Worker Ministries including writing to you precious ones who read our monthly newsletter.  What I am saying is so critical that I have promised God that as long as He gives me the good health and strength to serve Him, I will never retire because He did not create me to sit on a sofa glaring at a television screen all day.

Thank you Heavenly Father for creating Carol Miller…….because I am absolutely convinced that this world is a better place because of dedicated workers like her!

By the way, when she reaches age 100 later this year, Chic-Fil-A plans to provide Carol with a birthday party!  And, I am sure she will be served her favorite meal:  The chicken sandwich with a peach milkshake or a hot fudge sundae and lemonade.  Uummmm so good!

When I grow up, I want to be like “Miss Carol”

FOOTNOTE:  There are many Christian based businesses like Chic-Fil-A.  One of my favorites is Parker’s Barbecue in Greenville, North Carolina.  Click here for the full story including instructions on how to establish such an organization that is dedicated to serving our Lord and Savior!
