THE CHRISTIAN WORK ETHIC NEWSLETTER

There is a horrible disease that continues to spread throughout the United States and is growing day by day.  No, in this case, I am not referring to the pandemic viruses.

This one could be referred to as being a silent killer somewhat like some cancers which exist and by the time there is pain, it may be too late for a cure to take place.

It is…..

complacency

…and it can occur anywhere including in an individual’s personal and family life and in the workplace. For example, when I am often defending the Gospel on a daily radio program which originates in North Carolina, it would be easy to walk away and it is because of vicious attacks from some who call into the show.  Their vengeance does not stop at my door.  Some attack God and His Word and that includes denouncing the Old Testament as not being relevant to the time in which we are living.

I have learned that when you are operating from the turf of Jesus Christ, it goes with the territory.  You learn to expect it. But, in this day and age, so many succumb to such challenges forgetting that God never said the Christian life is a bowl of cherries.  The radio pogram is an excellent platform for standing up for Christ.  Yet, very few Christians ever call in.

Satan is extremely pleased that complacency has invaded many churches.  It is especially prevalent among those entrusted by God to manage the affairs of His church including enforcing policies which should be in existence  (deacons, board of directors, etc.).

I can cite hundreds of examples of one or more individuals in a congregation who come to church with the intent of causing trouble.  When that occurs, it becomes an acid test for the church leaders.

Strong leaders will “nip it in the bud” meaning they will deal with it immediately.  That includes being transparent with the congregation as necessary.  If not, rest assured, it will spread like cancer inflicting much more serious harm to the House of the Lord.

But, why is this often allowed to happen?

First, there is a false hope the problem will, somehow, disappear on its own.  This is wishful thinking because that aint gonna happen!   A “play it safe” mentality never pays any dividends.

Secondly, such weak leaders have a backbone weaker than one in a small fish.  There is no courage to do the right thing which may not be easy but is right.

Thirdly, such individuals may believe they are in a popularity contest so they want to just keep everyone happy thinking they will be respected and not recognizing that the opposite is true among most who attend the church.  It is akin to “the good ole boy’s club”, one of those dangerous cliques brought into the church compliments of satan himself.

Fourth, a weak leader lacks conviction.  If you have the conviction about what is right, you will eradicate the problem immediately.

Fifth, out of respect to such leaders, they may not be adequately trained in how to make decisions that are acceptable to God.  Leadership training should be one of the hallmarks of any church and I am speaking of training which takes place before one assumes this role.  It includes teaching one how to identify any  adverse consequences that would result from each alternative being considered in solving the problem.

Did I just say something about acceptable to God”?

God does not like complacency and that applies to the behavior of all members of the flock.  This truth is amplified in scripture when Jesus spoke to the church in Laodicea (Revelation 3:16).  He said……

“So because you are lukewarm,

and neither hot nor cold,

I am going to vomit you out of My mouth.”

I know that we Christians understand that the number one mission of any Bible believing church is to bring lost souls to Christ.  But, herein lies the greatest tragedy of complacency.  When problems are not addressed in a Godly manner, satan will cause utter chaos because he knows this will quickly diminish the objective of saving souls.  It is a major reason why there are so many empty church pews in America.

Much of this month’s message has concerned the church.  But, before closing, I challenge any individual who works in business…in the secular world…. to re-read what I have just communicated.  As you read, apply it to the possible lack of strong leadership in your workplace.  The truth is identically the same

After all, why would a supervisor not intervene in a conflict between two employees?  Complacency.  Why does an employee have no interest in going beyond the call of duty on the job?  Complacency.  What causes a manager to turn his head when he is aware that a case of sexual harassment is taking place on his shift?  Complacency.  After all, he may be the one planning to retire three months from now and could care less about the mess that will be transferred to his successor.  In effect, this person has already retired on the job while continuing to receive a paycheck.

Our ministry provides training on Biblical decisionmaking.  It is based on just one example…..the life that Jesus lived while on this earth.  Complacency was not in His vocabulary.  Yes, He was truly meek but never weak...never walking away from difficult situations.  Thus, leaders in the church, in business,  and elsewhere can learn how to solve people problems through following His example

The failure to do so will fulfill another truth from His Word……what we sew is truly what we will reap.
