THE CHRISTIAN WORK ETHIC NEWSLETTER

“God must have meant for us to laugh,

or else He would not have made so many mules, parrots, monkeys, and human beings."

(Abraham Lincoln)

Recently, we lost a beloved and famous worker, a life time resident of my community, who suddenly passed away.

Jeannie Robertson was a well-known humorist who entertained thousands. That included her appearances on the Grand Ole Opry.  Comedy was her specialty and only the Lord knows how much we need more laughter in these difficult times because......

"Laughter is a powerful medicine."

(Proverbs 17:22)

I am inspired anytime I see a life fully lived as was the life of Jeannie.  The Bible clearly says that we are all given both natural and spiritual gifts and that these gifts vary from person to person.  God had a calling for this lady and when she was summoned to it, she answered according to His will.  And, just think….if she had traveled down a different path, so many would have missed the laughs.  Bob Hope once said, "Anyone can make you cry, but God only gives the gift to make you laugh to a few."

Now, what I will say in the remainder of this newsletter is no laughing matter.

When God gives us talents and abilities, when He gives us the time to live our lives on His earth, when He provides  financial resources to many of us, when He places special individuals in our lives  who help us in our journey on this planet…..

He expects us to respond to the calling.

When I am teaching this truth in Worker Ministries, I love to point to examples…..to real people who have done this and there are so many.  Jeannie Robertson is another perfect example.

It is no secret that we have a severe problem in this country.  After businesses re-opened from being closed because of the pandemic, our country has been facing a severe shortage of workers.

Where are they?  What is going on?

Let me be Judgment Day honest. When I first learned of this, I quickly jumped to the conclusion that we just have a lot of lazy workers who are simply sitting at home and drawing money from Uncle Sam.  That may be true in many cases because laziness has always existed in this world which is why God addresses this subject in strict detail in His Word.

However, after laying aside the tunnel vision, I have been able to see other reasons for this situation. How about the parent who has decided to home school his or her child because of well-known problems that exist in public education. And, what about a worker who is remaining at home caring for a loved one who has a severe illness.  All of these need our prayers.

And, I am finding that after businesses closed, many employees decided to take advantage of the situation and make a career change and are re-tooling themselves through learning new skills that will lift their pay.  No one can fault anyone who makes this move and we need to pray that they will be completely successful in this endeavor.

And, what about those who sit at home but actually prefer to be at work.

Excuse me but that sounds like a contradiction or is that really possible.  After all, there are so many job openings so a case could be made that these are really the lazy ones. However, this also goes far beyond just loafing for some individuals.

Unlike Jeanne Robertson, work for many has no meaning to them. As I state in my book A Worker Need Not Be Ashamed, they are wanderers in the wilderness.  In the words of my late grandmother who possessed an outstanding work ethic…..”Come day go day…..God send Sunday”.  Show me a person who has a burning passion for their work and I will show you one who will almost run back into the workplace.  So, we also need to pray for these....... that they will discover why God made them and He will provide them with the engine that drives the calling (the right job and not just filling a job opening).

Thank God for those who are working because they are the ones who also bring wealth to this country.

But, while praying, we also need to remember those who are working but who lack a Christian work ethic.....one that is approved unto God.  You and I meet them often. Those are the ones who do the absolute bare minimum and often make mistakes, failing to do the job right the first time.  So many have become professional clock watchers……can’t wait until it is time to go home…or who take extra unauthorized breaks…….again, no purpose….just going through the motions.  This is a major reason why we see so many examples of poor customer service in this country.

Yes, they also need our prayers because that aint living!  It is only carving out a mere existence.  All of this is no laughing matter. I will guarantee you that Jeannie Robertson’s work assignments  were never boring or laborious!

I have come to recognize that Heaven will not be a place where people just float around in the cloudsWe will work in Heaven. The Bible teaches that "His servants will serve Him."  (Revelation 22:3)  In that eternal state, this will be more like that work which Adam and Eve enjoyed before they sinned. It will be restful, enjoyable, and meaningful. Work in Heaven is something to look forward to not to dread. As a result, this will be just one among numerous ways we will be able to glorify the Lord forever.

When we arrive in Heaven, we should not be surprised if Jeannie Robertson is busy making the residents laugh.

Now, for a footnote to this month's newsletter:  As we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving this month, may we all join together and continue to pray for a special group of workers who have not thrown in the towel and quit during this difficult time in history.  They are the ones whose passion is for the welfare of humanity. In fact, the passion is so strong, they are willing to risk their lives to save lives.  And who are they?

They include the health care workers, the EMT's, our law enforcement officials at all levels of government, those who work in our fire departments, AND those who serve in the military forces of this world in the name of freedom against evil enemies.
