This month, I invite you to join me as I flash back to a critical event which occurred in January as I prepared to leave for one of our satellite locations:  New York City.

After traveling for forty five minutes from my home to the airport, I arrived in the parking garage around 6:15am. I always carry two pieces of luggage which I place on the back seat of my car. After parking, I opened the back door to retrieve both bags.

I removed my hanging bag containing shirts, pants, etc. Then I reached for the smaller bag but…wait….wait.... I don’t see it. I frantically reach for the floorboard thinking it may have fallen into that area. No such luck!

Have you ever felt like the earth was sinking in beneath your feet?

I immediately faced the reality that I would miss my flight which was scheduled to leave at 8am. After a panic attack which lasted for less than one minute, I traveled back to my home (45 minutes). Upon raising the garage door, I saw the other bag on the floor next to my large garbage disposal can.

Suddenly, I remember. I had sat the bag on the floor and pulled the can away from the wall. This would be a convenient reminder to move it to the street for pick up the day after I return home.

But, as I traveled back to the airport, I continued to ask myself, “How could I have forgotten to pick up the bag? How?”   After struggling with what I would have called my stupidity, I finally decided it was time to speak with God.  That was certainly a good idea since He had been waiting a while for my contact.

"God, please rescue me from possibly having to sit in that airport all day waiting for another flight. I need to be in New York ministering to the homeless. God, could you delay my original flight so that when I get back to the airport, the plane will still be there?”

Now, let us fast forward. I have returned to the airport and it is 8am and I quickly discover that my original flight has just left. I am racing to the Delta ticket counter. agent is able to place me on the next flight which will leave at 10am. Praise the Lord! I will only be two hours late leaving. And although I had a nonrefundable ticket, meaning I would have to pay an extra charge, the Delta agent waived that requirement. In a world full of cold people, there are those who will still extend their hand of mercy to others. Again, praise the Lord!

End of my February message?

Not yet. That is because I have not yet discovered why I left that bag in the garage.

I am now in the waiting area and meet a gentleman from Connecticut who wishes to move to North Carolina. He has come to our state for a job interview. I quickly discover that he is a Christian brother and after sharing the beginning of my difficult day with him, we converse on many topics pertaining to immorality in this country.  Just before we walk to the boarding gate, I tell him I will be sure to pray he will find the right job and be able to move to the Tarheel State.

As soon as I delivered that promise, I said, “My friend, I have just discovered why I left that bag in the garage. If that had not happened, you and I would have never met.”

Then, God immediately brought to my mind the memory of a dynamic sermon.  During the message, the pastor shared a question which he has had to answer quite frequently when ministering to his flock: “If I arrive in Heaven and one of my loved ones did not make it, will I know?” He made it clear that the answer is no because grief is not present in our future home. The pastor then stated a profound truth: God will block such a memory of that relationship for an eternity.  That is a somber but also an uplifting truth.

And, my bag I left at the trash can?   Since I was fully alert (and do not have alzheimers), there is not one doubt in my mind that, for that one second, God blocked my memory because only He had already created the conclusion to this story.  It is only when we are exposed to the final result that we can then recognize that such a development is a God thing because it can not be explained in any other way.

I might add that I have had a few other such identical interventions in which God placed His hand on my mind to alter any plans which I had made.  In one such case, he removed me from a relationship with a female friend which would have eventually become a lifetime disaster.

As I close, please permit me to bring YOU into my story.  Please join me in praying that God will bring gainful employment in North Carolina to the Connecticut gentleman that is in line with His calling for this man's life.

As a footnote, I am looking forward to being with so many of my Christian brothers and sisters very soon as I teach at the BASS Conference in Castro Valley, California March 8 and 9This conference is always a magnificent Christian education blessing for all in attendance!
