THE CHRISTIAN ETHIC NEWSLETTER

This month, I invite you to read three scenarios and you should be able to locate the name of a well-known game that is played in many workplaces:

1. ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES - Mary Smith, a female employee, has submitted her job opportunity request which might enable her to advance to Assistant Operations Manager of a transportation firm.  She has an excellent performance history with her company.  However, she is not promoted to the job.  Instead, Alfred Allison is hired from outside.  He is a good friend of the owner. Although he has no prior experience in transportation, he will be trained for the position.

2. CO-WORKERS – Alice Weiner does not like one of her older co-workers.  “She is always late getting reports to me which causes me to get behind.  We need someone my age in that job."

3. SERVICE – A waitress is assigned to one gentleman eating alone and to one table where five individuals are being served. Almost all of her attention is focused upon the five because she knows the value of five tips. The lone gentleman has finished half of his meal and must wait as much as fifteen minutes before extra tea is brought to his table. (It seems this kind of service for this gentleman has become the rule rather than the exception in recent times.)

The Bible is clear about the game that is being played.

Favoritism is incongruent with God’s character.  If God played this game, He would have never sacrificed His son on the cross.  In effect, all of us are equal before Him because all have fallen short of His glory.   And, in His judgment, anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong and there is no favoritism.

Furthermore, James tells us that if we show favoritism, we sin and are convicted as "lawbreakers".

Church leaders are especially charged not to show favoritism. The Apostle Paul commanded Timothy, a young church leader, to keep instructions given to him and without partiality.  (1 Timothy 5:21)

Business owners and employees need to understand that there are also adverse economic consequences when favoritism is practiced by their organization.  As an example, let’s return to Scenario #3.

Since the waitress is serving those five individuals at one table and the lone gentleman at the other table, who provides the largest tip for service?

The answer is the one gentleman.  He eats there at least twice/week and that adds up to 102 tips per year.  On the other hand, those at the table of five just happen to be passing through town and may never eat there again.

And suppose the gentleman decides not to return?   An average of $8 per meal would mean the restaurant would lose a customer who, otherwise, would have spent $4,160 in five years.  And, that is the loss from losing just one patron.

As customers, we need to share such consequences with those who engage in such unethical practices.  Yes, we should have a heart of forgiveness.  But, when we continue to patronize a business in which  favoritism becomes a regular trademark, we are actually promoting such a wrong.
