Some of us may remember the famous comedian, Roger Dangerfield, who was well known for saying, “I just don’t get no respect”.   He once said that his dog keeps barking at the front door. “He don’t want to go out. He wants me to leave. Even with my dog, I just don’t get no respect”.

Looking through the eyes of one who wanted to entertain others with such humor, he yearned to have an audience who would laugh.

But, there is another side to all of this and it isn’t exactly funny.

How about a boss who is not respected even though he or she may be an excellent manager or a child who does not respect his or her parents.  And, let us not forget about disrespect for law enforcement officers. As we look inside the church, we find pastors who are also not respected.

What is going on?

First, I recognize that some individuals are not respected because of their own behavior that is less than desirable.  But, that is not the conclusion to this fact of life.

There is also an absence of respect because there are those who have never learned a truth that is very much pronounced in God’s Word:

“Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists

what God has appointed,

And those who resist will incur judgment.”

(Romans 13:2)

Who are the authorities?  Before providing an answer, the most important question must be asked:  Who is the ultimate authority and the answer is God.  The first human beings who bypassed this truth were Adam and Eve because they ate the forbidden fruit. Defying the authority of God always produces undesirable consequences which is why we still have sin in this world today.

But, God also places others in positions of authority and, unless we are told to do something that is in conflict with God’s Word, the Bible clearly states we are to obey them.

In the workplace, a major reason why one will resist authority is because that individual, with a heart of self centeredness, wishes to disregard this truth and become the "expert" in all things.  That can be easy when you do not have to wear the hat of the boss whose job can be very difficult.  And, this is a major reason why there is conflict at work. Have they not heard about the danger of having too many chiefs and not enough indians?

Such truth not only applies to a business but to the church.  I regret to say there are those who have the false idea they “own the church” and that includes trying to bypass church leaders (including the pastor) so they can have it their way.  Does this ungodly behavior sound familiar?

The real truth about this is spelled out in a wonderful anthem that contains these words:

“As we gather in this place today
Holy Spirit come and have Your way, have Your way
As we lay aside our own desires
Sweep across our hearts with holy fire, have Your way

This is Your house, Your home
We welcome You, Lord, we welcome You
This is Your house, Your home
We welcome You today”

But, what about those who are the authorities but, because of their behavior, may not deserve respect.

In this case, when we submit, we are not necessarily respecting the individual.  We are getting ourselves in a place under authority, and when we get to that place then God is going to work in our life in an incredible way.  God is going to see that we do not have the spirit of rebellion, and God is going to infuse in us great power and give us kingdom authority just as he did with David.

David not only recognized but also respected Saul’s authority. It’s one thing for us to grudgingly give in to authority, but it’s another thing for us to respect that authority and to respect the leaders God has put over us.

Biblical submission is one equal, voluntarily placing him or herself under another equal, that God may, therefore, be glorified.  Since we must first submit to the ultimate authority of God, submission to others is simply getting under the authority that God has established, not for that authority’s sake, but for God’s sake who has established authority everywhere and is behind all authority.

Anyone who has any concerns about all of this truth needs to consider another possibility.

Suppose there was no authority anywhere.  That would mean no law enforcement, no rules in the classroom, no strategy for having a healthy family relationship, and utter chaos in the workplace.

In fact, we see a vivid picture of this today in the lives of people who are going to have it their way resulting in confusion and division and hatred and no respect for anyone except themselves.

As we consider this, may we be so thankful we serve such a wise God who understands human nature so well, His truth has established certain parameters in our lives which should be respected.

One who may defy authority and who may deny the truth I have shared might say, "Says who?"    Says…God, our ultimate authority!

We have always understood the importance of being on the cutting edge of technology as a major vehicle for quality service and promoting the Christian work ethic throughout the world.

Upon reaching our tenth anniversary, our new web site was completely redesigned by Rick Martin, our Director of Technical Services. This site enables us to provide interesting and far reaching technology features which visitors to the site can enjoy using.

We also replaced all of our computer equipment at our world headquarters at Elon North Carolina with new state-of-the-art technology that is second to none!

There have been several attempts to hack our web site including one such threat from an individual in Saudi Arabia.  Such dastardly deeds failed because we have built several walls around the site which become our "Secret Service Agents" for blocking anyone from damaging the site.

In 2013, we formed a partnership with Constant Contact, the world's number one on-line e-mail market organization.  Their outstanding service assures that our monthly newsletter will be swiftly delivered to 10,000 subscribers throughout the world.

Stay tuned and we will keep you posted concerning all exciting developments in a ministry that is reaching out to thousands from Elon to New York to Honolulu to China!

OPERATION UPLIFT is a specific strategy which enables our ministry to literally go underground to reach out to important souls created by God Almighty. These are real human beings who have become wanderers in the wilderness! They are known as "the homeless".

Kathy Perkinson, Vice President of Worker Ministries: "Poverty will never be eliminated until these individuals find their purpose for living and become employed so they can fulfill their purpose based on the will of God! Helping them find their mission becomes OUR mission!

We do not preach to them. We let them know that God loves them and it is not His purpose for them to live on the streets and there is a better life for them if they are willing to find it. We then show them how to move in that direction."

OPERATION UPLIFT is conducted at our Worker Ministries world wide satellite locations.

Visit our ITINERARY page on this web site to keep up with our schedule and any changes which may become necessary.

Thanks to Rick Martin, our Director of Technical Services, you can now hear live messages from Jim Hogsett as he speaks the plain truth about the Christian work ethic. Simply click on the Audio Player on our web site home page  and select any message listed on the menu.

Included on our list is an interview which took place when Jim was a guest on the Living Christian Radio Network which originates from Seattle Washington. The interview is significant in that some very critical questions were asked concerning difficulties in living the Christian life in today's workplace. The broadcast also enabled us to carry our message on how to live the Christian life in the workplace to workers in Canada and in the western half of our country.

We hope these messages will provide further help as you work on living the CHRISTIAN life in the workplace.
