Whien I am residing  in New York City  (my second home place), I find that  if you look at your watch and perk up your ears… will be in immediate contact with the sound of honk, honk, about every two or three seconds.  Yes, the sound of horns from impatient individuals enters the ear canal and the origination of those honks is not limited to thousands of cab drivers.

So much noise!

Now, personally speaking,  I find no problem with it except….except when it causes the quality of my life to become degraded.

Noise comes in different shapes and sizes.  How about the noise which produces an interruption such as when you are busily engaged in an activity at work….trying to do your best in concentrating because what you are doing may be very complexed or has a deadline attached to it.  The last thing you need is for someone to stand at your door and ask, “Hey, how was your weekend?”

In this situation, you do not need noise; you need peace and quiet.

Now, let me be realistic.  All noise can not be eliminated nor should that be the case.  Too much quiet could also cause problems since isolation can also be dangerous.   In other words, there is a time and place for everything and that includes opening your door to others including those who have needs.

But, when we know we need to get rid of the noise, what is the answer?  How about returning to the seven …fruits….and locate the one that reads……

self control.

But, some may say this fruit of the spirit is a morality issue having no connection to noise.  I beg to disagree.

Recently, I was in my sitting room praying.  All of a sudden an alarm sounded.  It came from my electric dryer which tells me when the clothes are dry.  I know that you understand that any concentration on speaking with my creator was totally destroyed because of poor planning and missing an important truth:

Prayer comes before operating a dryer.

Therefore, I should have waited until after I prayed to dry the clothes.  Self control!

As for the co-worker who interrupted you when you were in the middle of a process dealing with a complexed issue, the individual who built the workplace facility provided the weapon to control this.  It is called a door and it can be closed under such conditions.  This truth is especially important for those who earn their living through working at home.  Otherwise, the quality of the work can be adversely affected.  And, may I quickly add that in this time of the pandemic when so many children are involved in viritual learning at home, this truth also applies to them

But, let me take my message a step further.  Any one of us can often have a problem focusing on Jesus Himself because of noise.  And, this can easily take place anywhere including the church.  In today’s culture, it is not unusual to be disconnected from the message coming from the pulpit because the sound of a cell phone just completed satan’s work in distracting you.  God speaks to us through His Word and what I am describing is a self imposed interruption of His communication with us which is far beyond being discourteous to our Lord.  It is a slap in the face of the Holy Spirit!

My message would be less than complete if I did not point to the classic example of this from Luke 10:38-42.  Christians find it to be a true story that is very familiar. Remember when Martha opened her home to Jesus?  And, her sister was sitting at His feet listening to what He said.  All of a sudden, Mary, who evidently was working in the kitchen preparing a meal, interrupted the conversation.  "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself?"

Isn't it interesting that Mary addressed her guest (Jesus) instead of her sister.  In either case, the interruption was totally unnecessary.  But, the fact she had just insulted her Creator (the Lord Jesus Christ) brings it to a level that is disgusting.  But, let's go beyond her creation of unnecessary noise.  She is telling us about her priority .....that work that needs to be done is more important than a conversation with Christ.

The response from Jesus makes it clear that Martha had made the right choice.  And, when the alarm from my clothes dryer sounded, God immediately implanted a strong message on my heart and I was convicted by it: "Which is more or getting the clothes dried?"  That's the kind of message which can cause one to change his or her way of living.

So, what is the bottom line for this month’s newsletter?  Raise our antenna to detect any noise that can draw us away from God and from using the abilities which He has given to us as we fulfill His calling for our life and exercise self control to eliminate such interference.
