DO  NOT  BE  DECEIVED  BY GOOD  NEWS  ABOUT  JOBS!

As we approach a major election, the politicians from both parties are addressing one of their favorite subjects: JOBS!

Hurrah!  Unemployment is dropping or at least the latest statistics suggest such an improvement.

But, do not be deceived!  The truth is that real good news about lower employment only exists when new good paying jobs are being created.

The bad news is that unemployment can still decrease   when
workers who have been looking for employment with no success decide to give up and drop out of the workforce.  The same is true when workers are employed in lower paying jobs because no other jobs are available. This makes the unemployment statistics look good but  results in a lower standard of living for those concerned.

You should also beware of listening to politicians who promise more jobs.  Most jobs are not created in Washington!  Jobs are brought into a state by local and state leaders who must have a continual aggressive recruiting effort and sufficient economic attractions such as lower taxes!

In some states, officials have waited too late to replace jobs which are lost with higher paying ones.  An example is my native North Carolina.  For at least two decades, officials saw textile and furniture plants close year after year as well as a decrease in tobacco production.  Now, the truth has come home to roost!

Beyond a deception in the unemployment numbers, I am concerned about this subject for other reasons. Since few new jobs are being added, workers who have lost their jobs are being forced to take employment simply to make ends meet. In addition, workers often can not find the job which fulfills their calling!

As a result, many are not happy and the Christian work ethic continues to be adversely affected!   This is a shame especially when  it is the result of poor long range planning!

Very truly yours,

Jim Hogsett, President/Founder; Worker Ministries and Writer for Guideposts Magazine
